The comptroller of prisons, Adamawa State
Command, Mr Ekijere Aken Shidi, has disclosed that on Sunday midnight, about
200 inmates in Numan prison overpowered prison officials
during a melee which resulted to the death of an inmate and the burning
down of vital documents including court warrants.
“A prisoner attempted escaping through the
toilet and climbed the fence and was to escape when a police and armed squad
spotted him but in panic he fell on the slab and was rushed to the hospital,’’
he said.
“They stoned my men, burnt down
generator and destroyed many documents. What happened was that a prisoner
attempted to escape through toilet and in the process of jumping the fence he
fell on toilet slab before he was rushed to hospital and the other intimates
overpower the officers on job. We called on other security personnel to
assist us and after which he was taken to hospital where he was confirmed
dead”, said he.
However, reports say that the
inmates went wild when the prison warders beat one of the inmates to state of
unconciousness on allegation of attempted escape which resulted to his death
early Monday.
The inmates, who were aggrieved by the
development, were said to have gone on rampage and pounced on the prison
officials which resulted to a serious fracas within the prison facility.
