About 7000 people displaced from the violence in Nasarawa State are said to have taken refuge in the southern part of Plateau State. The Plateau State Commissioner of Information, Yiljap Abraham, made the disclosure on Monday in Jos, at a news conference after an emergency Plateau executive council meeting presided over by the deputy governor, Ignatius Longjan, at the government lodge, Jishe. According to Mr. Yiljap, the internally displaced people from the neighboring state have taken refuge in Qanpan and Shendam Local Government Areas of the state, hence the need to assist them with basic necessities.
"We
do hope that the situation over there returns to normal, so that they can go
back and live as it used to be," he said. Mr. Yiljap said government has
concluded arrangements through the Plateau State Emergency Agency, SEMA, to
provide basic and immediate needs to the victims, stressing that the deputy
governor will this week lead a government delegation to assess the situation. "SEMA
has been mandated to take quick actions to assist the displaced persons,"
he said.Speaking
on other matters deliberated upon during the emergency council meeting. Mr.
Yiljap said N300 million has been approved for the 2013 Muslim pilgrimage to
Mecca. "This is to ensure that Plateau residents prepare for life after
here," he said. Earlier, the Commissioner for Information told journalists
that council approved N7.9 billion for completion of some road projects in the
17 local governments of the state and to also construct new ones. "Governor
Jang has pledged not to leave any project undone before the expiration of his
tenure," he said.The Plateau council also discussed the immunisation of
children between 9 months and 5 years against measles in the first week of
October. Residents between one and 29-years-old are also to be immunised
against cerebrospinal meningitis in November, the Commissioner of Health, Fom Dakwat,
