Inadequate Preparations Against Impending Flood Disaster

Flood disaster: Red Cross Canvasses Emergence Plans

Following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET’s, Seasonal Rainfall Prediction, SRP, Red Cross Society, Nigeria has called on Nigerians to make adequate preparations against impending flood disaster.NIMET recently predicted that there was going to be flood in some states of the federation this year.In an exclusive chat with our correspondent, the Secretary General, Mr. Bello Diram, said that Red Cross is adequately prepared on the area of giving first aid as well as the organization training its members to combat the effect of disasters including flooding.
He noted that Red Cross is always prepared with its geographical spread as well as technical knowledge of helping victims during disaster, pointing out that Nigerians do not take warning seriously noting that majority of the disasters that occur in the country are preventable.“I want to advise the people to be prepared before the flood comes. Any occasion I attend, I have always told Nigerians to live up to expectation by putting away negligence and nonchalant attitude. Most of the disasters that had occurred here in Nigeria did not come unaware. They are things that even the communities where they occurred could prevent. So I charge everyone to always get ready.” Diram said that disaster is not a one man or organization’s business rather “It is an issue of collective responsibility.”He commended National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA for bringing stakeholders in disaster management which he said has beefed up the sector in terms of preventing and ameliorating the effect of disasters.Source: http://www.theabujainquirer.com
