THE pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has condemned the killing of 10 Ibadan traders in Maiduguri, Borno State, by gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, asking the Federal Government to immediately pay adequate compensation to the families of the deceased.
A communiqué of the group made available to Saturday Tribune after a special meeting in Akure, Ondo State, and endorsed by its National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, stated that Afenifere was pained by the loss of the traders, and called for thorough investigations into the incident in order to bring the killers to justice.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to the families of the deceased even as we ask the security forces to fish out the perpetrators of this heinous act so they can be brought to justice. We equally demand full compensation for the bereaved families,” the group said.
The communiqué also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for declaring open the reconstruction works on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
“The flag-off of the road personally by President Goodluck Jonathan is a positive sign that the government is fully committed to reconstructing the road. It is our hope that the road will be speedily done and it will not be the end of government attention to failing infrastructure in the South-West region,” Afenifere said.
The pan-Yoruba group also expressed worry at the spate of strikes in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and called for prompt action from government.
It said: “Academic staff in our polytechnics have just returned from a long strike while their university counterparts are still on strike. Different non-academic unions are on one strike or the other. This situation is not healthy for the educational development of our children.
“Afenifere therefore calls on the Federal Government and the unions to get back to the negotiating table and find solutions to the problems so that our children can get back to school.”
