A Mararaba Upper Area Court in
Nasarawa State on Monday ordered that Godwin Success, 33, of Angwan Mission,
Masaka, be remanded in prison for allegedly raping two sisters. The presiding
judge, Mr Vincent Gwahemba, ordered that the accused be remanded till Aug. 5,
when hearing in the case will begin.
Gwahemba said the court was using
its powers under Section 183 of the Criminal Procedure Code to remand the
accused to enable the police to conclude its investigations.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp.
Jospeh Ahwa, told the court that on Jan. 5 at Masaka, Nasarawa State, the
accused called the victims aged 6 and 8 and forcefully had carnal knowledge of
them. The prosecutor said the victims sustained injuries in the process of the
rape, and that the offence was punishable under Section 358 of the Penal Code.
NAN reports that the punishment for
rape under the section is life imprisonment.
Ahwa told the court that the offence was not bailable and that the victims were currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Keffi in Nasarawa State.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence. (NAN)
